Interview with Michelle Zarrin, author of 'From My Heart to Yours'

From My Heart to YoursABOUT FROM MY HEART TO YOURS

With an emotionally secure and sheltered upbringing, Sofia, was in for an unexpected ride when she married Earl. Their stable and unnerving union would take deeper turns as they experienced(?) health issues, betrayal and shattered hearts. With each new circumstance Sofia faced, she shed a layer of naiveté, deepening her perspective of life. Beautiful life lessons learned from preschool children healed her wounds and dissipated her scars. They taught her about the human condition at it’s purest. But then the biggest tragedy happened in Sofia’s life, leading her to seek deeper answers. At the end of the book (her story?), she learns that the art of life is how we deal with it’s struggles. Through a powerful and inspiring journey into the soul, she regains the light and love within. Purchase at: barnes and nobleamazon

What are you most proud of accomplishing so far in your life?
My book is an accomplishment I am proud of.
How has your upbringing influenced your writing?
My family is artistic. We all have an outlet to express ourselves through our imagination. And for me, the formation of letters, words and sentences is the creative expression of my soul.
When and why did you begin writing?
I wrote my book to share with the world all of the life lessons I have learned. As for when I began: it was in my teenage years by keeping a journal.
Do you recall how your interest in writing originated?
I find power in words. It was a gradual development through my years to thoroughly express myself with written documents.
When did you first know you could be a writer?
My friends and family would consistently tell me that my writing was very inspiring and emotional.
What inspires you to write and why?
Sharing my life lessons inspires me to write. I believe that by sharing our stories or lessons, it brings the human connection together.
What genre are you most comfortable writing?
Fiction and nonfiction
What inspired you to write your first book?
The story of my life and all the lessons I learned through the years inspired me to write. I believe the art of life is how we deal with our struggles and wanted to share with my readers what lead me to that discovery and mindset.
Who or what influenced your writing once you began?
My life story and lessons learned influenced my writing.
What do you consider the most challenging about writing a novel, or about writing in general?
People get intimidated with writing because they become overwhelmed by the magnitude of the dedication. Yet, I tell everyone to take it one step at a time. Even if you write one page a day, you will have a novel by the end of one year.
Did writing this book teach you anything and what was it?
My ex-husband’s existence became darker through time. And the darker he became, the more I steered in the opposite direction. I began doing yoga, eating better and focusing on my spiritual path. Now I meditate one hour per day and believe in the power of the mind for the advancement of one’s life.
Do you intend to make writing a career?
Yes. I find solace in sitting before my laptop and sharing all that is within me.
Have you developed a specific writing style?
I love clear description and poetic metaphors when explaining a scenario or thought.
What is your greatest strength as a writer?
I do not allow writer’s block to get in the way of my goal for the day. I know that eventually I can break through the block.
What is your favorite quality about yourself?
I have love and compassion for all of humanity.
What is your least favorite quality about yourself?
I can be impatient with getting to what I want. So I find myself stopping to appreciate the moment for what it is, not for what I would like for it to be.
What is your favorite quote, by whom, and why?
“Just when the caterpillar thought the world was over it became a butterfly” ~ Anonymous. This quote is actually on the back cover of my book. There was a period in my life when I knew I was cocooned with troubles and a future to build. That quote helped me know that in the end, I would be set free.

A Conversation with Elaine Cantrell, author of 'The Enchanted'

Elaine Cantrell was born and raised in South Carolina where she obtained a master’s degree in personnel services from Clemson University.  She is a member of Alpha Delta Kappa, an international honorary society for women educators, Romance Writers of America, and EPIC authors.  Her first novel, A New Leaf, was the 2003 winner of the Timeless Love Contest.  When she’s not writing or teaching, she enjoys movies, quilting, reading, and collecting vintage Christmas ornaments.

Her latest book is the fantasy romance, The Enchanted.

Visit her website at www.elainecantrell.com.

Thank you for this interview!  I’d like to know more about you as a person first.  What do you do when you’re not writing?

Thanks so much for having me on your blog. When I’m not writing I’m a high school social studies teacher who likes to collect vintage Christmas ornaments, play with her dogs, hang out with her grandchildren, read, watch reality TV, and go to movies. I used to cook, but I decided I didn’t want to do that anymore so I quit.

When did you start writing?

I started writing in 2001 when my son let me read a book he had written. I’d always wanted to write, so I thought I’d give it a shot too. Little did I know how writing would take over my life.  In a good way.

As a published author, what would you say was the most pivotal point of your writing life?

I believe it was when I got a series of good editors. The changes they suggested were obviously worthwhile which hadn’t always been true in my case. Working with them, I learned a lot about the editing process which has of course made my work much better.

If you could go anywhere in the world to start writing your next book, where would that be and why?

In a previous interview I explained why I’d go to Russia, so let’s talk about Greece.  I’d love to go there for the atmosphere. I’d love to savor the strong sunshine and sparkling blue Aegean Sea. The vivid colors of Greece speak to my heart as well. My muse would be in overdrive in such a setting.

If you had 4 hours of extra time today, what would you do?

LOL. Not likely to happen is it, but if it did, I’d try to finish editing my current WIP. I want to submit it soon. I should do the laundry, but where’s the fun in that?

Where would you like to set a story that you haven’t done yet?

Maybe Mexico. A lot of Hispanic people live in my neck of the woods so it would be easy to get information for the book. Maybe they’d even like to read it!

Back to your present book, The Enchanted, how did you publish it?

It’s a traditionally published book. I submitted it to the publisher Astraea Press who contracted the book.

In writing your book, did you travel anywhere for research?

No, The Enchanted is a fantasy, so there isn’t anywhere to go to. I based my hero’s castle on European castles of the Middle Ages, but I already knew a lot about them because I’ve taught world history for a lot of years.

Why was writing The Enchanted so important to you?

I already had one fantasy/sci-fi romance under contract, and I enjoyed writing it so much I decided to do another one. It’s fun to create a new world. The novel under contract is titled Blue 52 and will be released in December of 2013 by Whiskey Creek Press.

Is the book always better than the movie?

Yes. Always. Books have more depth to them.

Where do you get your best ideas and why do you think that is?

My best ideas come from random things people say. I’ll hear something and suddenly feel a jolt as I start to think, “What if…” The idea for my current WIP came from looking at animal shelters on the Internet.

Any final words?

Once again, thanks again for letting me come to your blog. I’ve enjoyed  my stay very much. Readers, you’re going to like The Enchanted. The fantasy and romance are blended perfectly so that neither one overpowers the other.

Interview with Emma Right, author of Keeper of Reign

Keeper of ReignABOUT KEEPER OF REIGN
Books written in blood. Most are lost, their Keepers with them. A curse that befell a people. A Kingdom with no King. Life couldn’t get more harrowing for the Elfies, a blend of Elves and Fairies. Or for sixteen-year-old Jules Blaze. Or could it? For Jules, the heir of a Keeper, no less, suspects his family hides a forgotten secret. It was bad enough that his people, the Elfies of Reign, triggered a curse which reduced the entire inhabitants to a mere inch centuries ago. All because of one Keeper who failed his purpose. Even the King’s Ancient Books, did not help ward off that anathema. Now, Gehzurolle, the evil lord, and his armies of Scorpents, seem bent on destroying Jules and his family. Why? Gehzurolle’s agents hunt for Jules as he journeys into enemy land to find the truth. Truth that could save him and his family, and possibly even reverse the age-long curse. Provided Jules doesn't get himself killed first.

What are you most proud of accomplishing so far in your life?
Probably having my five kids.
How has your upbringing influenced your writing?
Actually life was hard for me while I was growing up. I was very much the latch-key kid and had to raise myself since I was about seven or eight I think that's probably one of the reasons I always made-up stories in my head--a runaway mechanism. Also, I buried myself in books and faraway lands--see the trend?
When and why did you begin writing?
When I first began writing Keeper of Reign in 2008 it was just a tale, one of many, that I made up for my five kids then. They wanted a fun, adventure story set in a fantastical setting and as a mom, I wanted the story to be more than just a fairy-tale. I wanted them to learn about the importance of loving each other--as they grated on each other a lot --and the importance of family, and the value of persevering and so on. So I wove these themes into the tale, at the time called Kingdom of Reign. Then I thought, hey, maybe I could publish this…hence the journey to self-publishing.

Do you recall how your interest in writing originated?

I've always like to tell stories even as a young girl of eight. I remember how my neighbor friends would sit around by the front porch and kept pestering to tell  one tale after another. I also recall being very annoyed by them--I mean how was a girl going to think up all the stories if she had to keep spewing these out each time she had any moment away from school work, right? As for writing, I joined an ad agency after college and was posted to the copywriting department where I had to write print ads, radio and even some 30 second TV blurbs. It was fun.

When did you first know you could be a writer?

Probably when I started winning awards at the ad agency. I thought, hey, this is fun and gratifying, too.

What inspires you to write and why?
Life and generally everything around me could inspire me. I see stories around every corner. I just wish I had the time to download them…like a computer!
What genre are you most comfortable writing?
I like the Young Adult and Middle Grade Age range. Maybe it's because I've done so many read-aloud with my kids throughout our sixteen years of homeschooling. I remember I sometimes read to them till I was hoarse. As for genre, I enjoy anything from mysteries to fantasy to thrillers to historical sagas.
What inspired you to write your first book?
One of the things that helped me to hone in on the theme for Keeper of Reign is the song from Switchfoot. When I first heard the song , "Meant to Live" (for so much more) it got me thinking about how far short each of us fall from our true potential. The trials and troubles of this world reduce us, and it feels that our troubled world is so big. This is just like how it was for the Elfies.
Who or what influenced your writing once you began?
I feel my desire to empower young people is one of the things that fueled me on and to write sometimes way in to the night.
What do you consider the most challenging about writing a novel, or about writing in general?
I think writing a novel was the second hardest thing I'd had to do. The hardest is probably raising kids! Writing in general is so different from creating a story and fleshing out characters and the world, and the conflict that can exist on so many levels. And don't forget structure. when I first wrote Keeper of Reign, it never occurred to me that stories had an architecture to them, really? I though architecture had to do with buildings? Several books from Writer's digest later, I had the Aha! moment and then I understood the need to have proper story engineering. All good stories have them. So, I had to re-revise keeper of reign--only about 17 times-- and finally I was happy with the structure. Of course, having two editors helped me some, too.
Did writing this book teach you anything and what was it?
I learned that when I put my book out there, in the wide world of Amazon and beyond, I will get praises, but I will also get criticisms, and it's just a fact of life, but that was something I never realized before. No one single book is for everyone. Some people may be offended, some may be confused, some may actually get it. I took a look at some of the bestselling authors and their books on Amazon, and I see that they, too, get five and one star reviews, and they have been doing this for decades, made millions, and even won awards.  Not everyone can eat jalapeno, without hiccuping. But as long some people enjoy the book, that's what's important. That's the most impactful lesson I'd learned from having written Keeper of Reign.
Do you intend to make writing a career?
I have so many other stories in me, so I'd like to continue doing this.
Have you developed a specific writing style?
I am more of an organic writer since I always have a story in my head, an idea I'd like to grow, and once I start with the character and the conflict the story blossoms on its own. I just keep writing until the end. But then I go back to the piece when it's all done (about six-seven months later) to rearrange scenes and plots so that it has the traditional structure that is recognized as the basic architecture of what a good story should be--the 1/4-1/4/1/4/-1/4 structure.
What is your greatest strength as a writer?
My wild imagination.
What is your favorite quality about yourself?
I feel for people, like when I see someone sad, it really hurts me, too, and I feel this helps me to be more compassionate.
What is your least favorite quality about yourself?
Feeling for people, too much. Funny, how the very same thing that could be a virtue could also be a vice, and that's how it is with me. When I don't put a boundary around this, life can get pretty confusing.
What is your favorite quote, by whom, and why?

I have too many quotes to put down, but one that I live by is, "where there's life there's hope". I just feel that hope is such an important element for each person to have to keep on going.

What are you most proud of accomplishing so far in your life?
Moving to the UK and residing there for a few years is something that I am very proud of accomplishing.  It was a move that I made on my own and it really challenged to grow out of my shell and see things with a whole new perspective.
How has your upbringing influenced your writing?
I grew up in a very creative household with singing…instruments…painting…etc. As a result I enjoy writing creatively in a descriptive, story-telling style.  It may sound strange, but for me writing is almost like composing a song but instead of using notes for the music, I use words.
When and why did you begin writing?
I begin writing as a child. I loved reading books and the pictures that the words painted in my mind. I began writing because I wanted to be able to do the same thing with my own words.
Do you recall how your interest in writing originated?
My interest in writing originated as a result of observing nature. I would see something like a sunset or a river and I wanted to capture it and describe it with words. Describing the warm colors that illuminated the rooftops at dawn was so much more interesting to me than simply saying the sun came up.
When did you first know you could be a writer?
It’s not a moment that I can pinpoint exactly. I remember perusing through fashion write ups online and thinking to myself, hey I can do this. I put together a few articles and sent them off to an editor. He loved them and that’s where my professional writing career began.
What inspires you to write and why?
I like to share stories and this is what inspires me to write. My end goal is always to share in some way a lesson, tip or experience that will benefit the reader.
What genre are you most comfortable writing?
I am most comfortable writing non-fiction. I like bringing everyday challenges and experiences to life through words. Whether its fashion trends or life lessons, I like the tangibility and connection I feel with it all. It makes it much easier to write.
What inspired you to write your first book?
While working as a fashion stylist, I noticed that some of my clients would look phenomenal after our image consultations, but the light in their eyes never seemed to linger no matter how perfect the look. It was a feeling I recognized from my own past, and I wanted to share what I learned with the hope of inspiring another. During our shopping trips we began to drill down deeper into the topics of self-love and esteem. With each conversation I saw a strength emerging. Whether it was finally learning to say no or finding the courage to let go of the past and move forward.
It was then that I began to see a lasting transformation and I realized that before a make-up or fashion consultation begins, her real beauty needed to start from within. This inspired me to write my first book, The Seeds of Beauty.
What do you consider the most challenging about writing a novel, or about writing in general?
Ideas are never ending however the challenge is to organize them in a concise format that works for the reader. This is where working with a good editor is invaluable.
What is your greatest strength as a writer?
When I was younger, I used to volunteer my time teaching children how to read. The most important thing I learned from this was how to simplify concepts and phrases so that these young minds could understand. This simplification is something that has carried over into my writing and allows readers to readily grasp the theme and message contained within the piece. It’s very beneficial and I feel fortunate to be able to communicate in such a manner.
What is your favorite quality about yourself?
My favorite quality about myself is the ability to laugh at life as well at myself. It’s not something I was always able to do and has changed my perspective on things greatly.
What is your least favorite quality about yourself?
I can be very impatient sometimes. As you can imagine, it gets me into trouble from time to time.
What is your favorite quote, by whom, and why?
“Faith is the bird that feels the light and sings when the dawn is still dark.” ― Rabindranath Tagore. This is my favorite quote because one of the hardest things to do is to trust or have faith when you can’t necessarily see the tangible outcome. I love the encouragement behind this quote to feel the light of your dreams and goals and to keep moving and believing in yourself even when the path is dark. It’s your faith and belief that gets you there.

Interview with Rajani Kannepalli Kanth, author of 'The Forever Young Regime'

The Forever Young Regime

ABOUT THE FOREVER YOUNG REGIME

THE ‘FOREVER YOUNG’ REGIME is a one of a kind Self-help Conversation. It is short, simple, and succinct. Yet it encapsulates much philosophical wisdom, conforming to the varied insights of traditional knowledge, current opinion, and a bit of modern ‘quantum’ science .It shows you, in a nutshell, how to achieve - and retain - a buoyant vitality and youthfulness for as long as you have the will to persist. The regime is also very simple: basic nutrition, vitamins, and mind-set: no hype, mumbo-jumbo, or voodoo:- and every idea in the book has been tested personally over a considerable period of time. In effect, the Argument is that appropriate changes in diet, exercise, and, most importantly, attitude, can be expected to have a large impact on overall well-being. THE ‘FOREVER YOUNG’ REGIME puts the reader in the driver’s seat in the uplifting journey of preserving, and extending, youthfulness. The thrust of the work is also ‘open-ended’, inviting the interested to test the ideas presented here ‘experimentally’, and make their own co-discoveries as they go along. However, there is a very important caveat: that individuals with special, and significant, health issues should not embark upon this – or, indeed , any - regimen without the full knowledge and consent of their health-care providers.

Improper Conduct by Isabel Roman Book Feature

ImproperConductFINAL_500x800ABOUT IMPROPER CONDUCT

One month on the job--that was all Detective Jules Marshall had with the LAPD but already she knew two things: 1. Her move from San Francisco was the best move she’d ever made. 2. Sleeping with her sexy as hell boss would be a big mistake. That didn’t stop her from wanting him or from acknowledging the same spark of need in his eyes. And Captain Callum Archer had eyes that devoured her. But when a trio of bank robbers picks LA as their target, her attraction to Callum takes a back seat. She’s seen this pattern before and confides in Callum her suspicions. She thought the case had gone cold until it heated in spectacular fashion; the bank robbers who blew up a car inside a building and killed at least five people have similar crimes back in San Francisco. The problem? She has no proof to go with her suspicions. Despite Callum’s objections, and the increasing temptation to give into her incredibly improper feelings for her captain, Jules plans to push ahead with an extremely unorthodox plan--date the killer. Callum isn’t happy. Jules is the one woman he’d break all the rules for and he’s more than willing to do so to keep her in his life. When she puts herself in the crosshairs of a psychotic killer, there isn’t anything he won’t do to protect her. But can he keep her safe and still catch the killer? Or will their improper relationship get in the way of their jobs?

We at I'm Shelf-ish are thrilled to be hosting R.K. Avery's Be Careful What you Wish For Book Blast today and you have a chance to not only find out about this captivating book, but win a $25 Amazon Gift Card and a signed paperback copy as well!  Details below!

About the Book:

Bunting Valley, North Dakota—a scenic and picturesque town where nothing dreadful ever happens—is a place where people feel safe leaving their front doors unlocked and their cars running in the driveways. So when beautiful, blue-eyed, three-year-old Maggie Taylor mysteriously vanishes, the Bunting Valley Police Department begins a kidnapping investigation that uncovers unthinkable crimes spanning many years—not only in Bunting Valley, but also in surrounding states and jurisdictions.

Bea Miller is a penniless widow, living a meager existence among the town’s residents with her four young, rambunctious boys. Her entire life she wished and dreamed of having a little girl of her own. When everything she did to have one of her own failed, Bea takes matters into her own hands and lives by the chilling words of her estranged father, “If you want something, take it.”
She and the boys visit a local beach and find the little girl of her dreams. She snatches the girl and they disappear in seconds, only to leave the parents bewildered and devastated.

Through the handwritten journals of Bea Miller, she takes you on a journey into the deranged mind of an individual who believes you can make your own wishes come true—at any expense; and sadly, also at the expense of others.

About the Author:

As a recent graduate of the Institute of Children’s Literature, R. K. Avery has written numerous, unpublished, children’s picture books, but her true passion is writing adult fiction.

“Having the ability to make people laugh or cry, just by using the written language, is a gift so powerful and I hope, one day, my name will be among those who possess it” ~ R.K. Avery

Be Careful What You Wish For is a psychological thriller.  She calls it “works of fiction with truth sprinkled throughout” and is available for sale in both e-Book and paperback or wherever fine books are sold.  Having been kidnapped from a beach as a small child, she has pondered time and time again what her life may have been like if her story didn’t have a happy ending.  Now she wrote her own ending.

R. K. Avery lives in Northeast Ohio with her husband, two kids, and four dogs.  She often jokes instead of a sign that says, "Don't let the dogs out,” she has a sign that says, "Don't let any more dogs in."
