Romance
Romance the greatest mental Gift to mankind.
 Yes I said it.
What more wonderful than the Overwhelming feeling of love.
To be able to be near
And to Smell the scent, to caress the tresses, to gently hold a hand,
This is rapture at its acme.
When there are times that I
Am Alone without you the seconds
Go painfully slow.
To espy you
Again is as if the heavens have
Brought forth the shining sun.
The flowers bloom in all their
Radiance and aromas.
To be in love is all.
This is a reality made In heaven.

Kimberly Lang isn’t one of those people who always knew she wanted to be a writer. She actually wanted to be a ballerina, but puberty failed to deliver the required swan-like elegance. That dream scuttled, she went on to get her Master’s Degree in English – and she has the bartending skills to prove it. At her husband’s insistence, she quit teaching in 2007 to write full-time, and in May 2008, sold her first book to Harlequin’s London office. That book, The Secret Mistress Arrangement, debuted at number nine on the Borders Series Bestseller list and won the 2009 National Readers’ Choice Award for Best First Book. Since then, Kimberly’s books have appeared on the USA Today, Amazon, Borders, and Bookscan bestseller lists, and have been translated into more than a dozen languages. (And, yes, that’s really cool.) She’s married to her college sweetheart, whom she affectionately (but appropriately) calls her Darling Geek, and is Mom to the most brilliant and beautiful child on the planet (aptly nicknamed Amazing Child). She started taking yoga-based fitness because she eats way too many jelly beans while writing, and became an instructor once she figured out that spending time with her butt over her head helped spark her creativity. More than one sticky plot point has been solved in the Down Dog position.  She has no hobbies because she doesn’t have time, but if she did, they’d include knitting, skiing and ballroom dancing, because they sound like they might be fun.

How has your upbringing influenced your writing?

I was raised in Canada (just outside of Toronto) by parents who believed in the value of a good education and instilled in me both a work ethic - earning what you get in life; and a sense of fair play - allowing all others that same right to advance themselves. My parents loved to travel and explore new places. They loved to read and then to discuss and to debate the merits of what they read. It made for an environment in which I was encouraged to learn and to express myself.

When and why did you begin writing?

I started writing quite young and never stopped. I suppose it went hand-in-hand with reading. I like storytelling and the way you can create an adventure and a setting and scenarios in which characters are tested. I love the weaving of suspenseful moments and leaving the reader hanging and waiting for the resolution to come. It's like a literary roller-coaster ride.

What do you consider the most challenging thing about writing?

I usually have a beginning and an end in mind. It's everything in between that's challenging.

Do you intend to make writing a career?

Yes, that is my intention. I've many more stories to tell.

Have you developed a specific writing style?

After writing and publishing these 3 books in the 'Run with the Wolves' trilogy (The Pack, The Oracle, and The Beast) - I suppose I have developed a specific writing 'style'. I like to create empathy for my characters. Everyone has flaws and everyone has merits. Whether they are protagonists or antagonists, they face and deal with the trials and tribulations of life.

What is your favorite quote?

My favorite quote? How about 'a picture tells a thousand words'. It's like a knife in the belly of every writer.

Bringing to light some of the key incidents of American history, author Karen Jourden seeks to safeguard liberty by remembering the past in Why I Am an Independent Conservative. She delves into early American history, the writing of the US Constitution, the American Civil War, and Franklin D. Roosevelt’s massive government expansion during the Great Depression. Book Chatting: Interview with Don Stewart, author of 'Past Medical History'

Don Stewart has a bachelor’s degree in Biology and Art, with honors, from Birmingham-Southern College, and an MD from the University of Alabama School of Medicine. He also served a year-long surgical internship at the Mayo Clinic, where he published some of his first composite drawings, and won awards for poetry and short fiction.

Dr. Stewart’s short stories have since been published in Pulse--voices from the heart of medicine, The Dead Mule School of Southern Literature, The Placebo Journal, and The Journal of Irreproducible Results, where he is listed as honorary Art Editor. For four years he served as Contributing Editor to Informal Rounds, the newsletter of the University of Alabama Medical Alumni Association.

For the past quarter century he has made his living as a self-styled Visual Humorist, hammering words and pictures together at the DS Art Studio Gallery in Birmingham: www.DSArt.com.  You can also find him at www.PastMedicalHistoryBook.com.

His latest book is the autobiography, Past Medical History.

About the Book:

Past Medical History is a compilation of short stories chronicling the life of Dr. Don Stewart, who grew up with the singular goal of becoming a physician, then quit the day he earned his medical license to make a life and a living as an artist. It’s The Devil Wears Prada meets The House of God, with a character who sees his own career circling the drain, pronounces it DOA, and turfs himself to an art studio for treatment. It’s Patch Adams, with an attitude; The Things They Carried, dressed up in scrubs and a white lab coat.

This series of stories draws a clear picture of a doctor who recognized the pitfalls of his chosen profession, discharged himself from the hospital, then took his life in a more creative, and far healthier direction.

Thank you for this interview!  I’d like to know more about you as a person first.  What do you do when you’re not writing?

I’m actually a full-time artist (www.DSArt.com).

I used to be a doctor, but left medicine the day I earned my license to practice. At that point I didn't feel I had anything more to prove academically, and I’d been in training long enough to understanding that my personality did not and would not mesh with the medical industry.

That’s what my book is about, the journey from childhood through college and medical school, and the slow realization that the career I had worked so hard to achieve just wasn’t for me after all.

What I did not understand – and what the book revealed to me – was that I had also been an artist, all along.

When did you start writing?

By the time I was a surgical intern, I was looking for anything that would lend a spark of creativity to my life, something that would distract me for even a moment from the constant focus on pagers and medical paperwork.

The local newspaper offered a prize to complete a story in the purple prose style. They set up the characters and the conflict; I wrote a few pages to flesh out the narrative. My entry won the contest. It gave me a glimmer of hope regarding alternative career possibilities.

It also let me know that I could do something creative, and succeed.

As a published author, what would you say was the most pivotal point of your writing life?

I would have to say that the pivotal point was when we could see that our crowdfunding campaign was going to be successful, and we had received enough pledges to self-publish a full print run of books.

(Interesting term, ‘published author’. It’s a title with many different meanings these days, isn't it? For me, it means that I’ve been fortunate enough to see my stories in printed form, and now I’d better get busy selling books.)

If you could go anywhere in the world to start writing your next book, where would that be and why?

I would come right here to my studio. Without putting too fine a point on it, I made the decision to go where I wanted and do what I wanted the day I left the hospital. That place is here, where I work and play. For me, the two concepts are essentially the same thing.

If you had 4 hours of extra time today, what would you do?

Draw. Or dig. I like to play in the garden, too.

Where would you like to set a story that you haven’t done yet?

I don't have much interest – yet – in writing fiction. That may come, but if it does, it will likely be after I get two or three more volumes of reminiscences out of my head.

Back to your present book, Past Medical History, how did you publish it?

We ran a crowdfunding campaign through Indiegogo:

Some years ago, we crowdsourced our first publication, a coffee table book of my drawings: http://www.dsart.com/gallery/item/dsart-coffee-table-book. That project was funded entirely through pre-orders. The experience gave us enough confidence to try the online crowdfunding program.

We designed, edited and formatted the book here in the art studio.

In writing your book, did you travel anywhere for research?

Past Medical History is an autobiography. The only place I had to travel was back in time.

Why was writing Past Medical History so important to you?

Completing this project was definitely a check mark on my bucket list. I’ve known for years that I would one day write this book, and that it would have this title.

“Past Medical History” is a medical term, a list of the maladies you have suffered prior to your current state of health. The pun was unavoidable – and it makes the perfect title for this collection of stories.

Writing Past Medical History also allowed me to start thinking of myself as a writer – something a little different than an artist who happens to write. I’m still not sure how
comfortable I am with the label, but it’s a great excuse to start writing another book.
If there’s a sequel detailing my life as an artist, I plan to call it History of Present Illness.

Where do you get your best ideas and why do you think that is?

My best ideas always stem from unexpected verbal juxtapositions. Puns, mostly, especially with my artwork, since I am such a visual thinker. But as I find myself writing more, I am noticing that descriptive phrases come to me more easily as I hold an image in my mind.

Any final words?

Not yet…

What are you most proud of accomplishing so far in your life?
My two beautiful and talented daughters.
How has your upbringing influenced your writing?
My mom was and is an avid reader. I grew up stealing her Harlequin romances when she wasn’t looking and reading them in secret.
When and why did you begin writing?
I wrote poetry and short stories when I was young, but didn’t start my first novel until after my first child was born. A friend dared me to write a book, and I did it!
Do you recall how your interest in writing originated?
I love to read and, for me, that transitioned into a desire to write stories of my own.
When did you first know you could be a writer?
High school – I won a poetry contest. J
What inspires you to write and why?
Every day things inspire me. I often ask the “what if” question. What if someone chose to do that instead of this? That sort of thing. If someone says something funny, smart or cute I often think of how fun it would be to include it in a story. Then my brain starts creating the story on the spot.
What genre are you most comfortable writing?
Romance, of course, but for subgenre, it would contemporary romance or romantic suspense, though I do have a special fascination with World War One.
What inspired you to write your first book?
I was dared to do it.
Who or what influenced your writing once you began?
I joined RWA and a few of its online chapters. I met several people in those chapters who became my critique partners, mentors and friends. Fifteen years later, we’re still critique partners, mentors and friends.
What do you consider the most challenging about writing a novel, or about writing in general?
Writing is hard work. Anyone who tells you different either hasn’t written an entire novel or has been eating some really “special” brownies. Charles Bukowski said it best: Don’t ever write a novel unless is hurts like a hot turd coming out.
Did writing this book teach you anything and what was it?
I learn something new every day from writing. This book taught me that communication is much more complex that most people realize and not communicating can get a person in a lot of trouble!
Do you intend to make writing a career?
Not really. I started writing on dare, but once I finished that first one, I just had to write another, and so on.
Have you developed a specific writing style?
I write fast paced, action focused stories about grief, loss and living with post traumatic stress disorder.
What is your greatest strength as a writer?
This is a tough question. A lot of possible answers came and went through my mind, but I think the best one is: persistence. The persistence to write about things that make me feel uncomfortable and the persistence of my characters to face emotionally dangerous situations – and come through whole at the end.
What is your favorite quality about yourself?
I like helping other people in whatever it is they want to succeed at in their life.
What is your least favorite quality about yourself?
I have a hard time saying the word “no”.
What is your favorite quote, by whom, and why?
You don’t concentrate on risks.  You concentrate on results.  No risk is too great to prevent the necessary job from getting done. – Brig. Gen. Chuck Yeager.

General Yeager was a test pilot and the first man to break the sound barrier.  I think this quote is a damn good way to live life.

However, few patients with chronic ailments ever really get well by taking drugs.

How can they?
