Interview with Arthur K. Flam, co-author of '41 Strange'

Arthur K. Flam was born in New York City and graduated from Johns Hopkins University with a B.A. in writing, and from New York University with an M.F.A. in film. He served as Editor-in-Chief of Johns Hopkins's oldest literary magazine, ZENAIDA, and worked as a journalist for the BALTIMORE CHRONICLE. He started in the film industry as an assistant on Abel Ferrara's vampire film, THE ADDICTION. He has co-written screenplays for the films PENNY DREADFUL and HIT AND RUN.  41 STRANGE is his first book. He lives in Los Angeles.

About the Book:

41 STRANGE, a first-of-its-kind e-book anthology devoted exclusively to “short-short stories of the strange and horrifying,” awaits just a couple of clicks away for Kindle readers who enjoy a good shiver up their spines.

41 STRANGE is the bizarre debut collection of authors/screenwriters Diane Doniol-Valcroze and Arthur K. Flam, who deliver a reading experience in the spirit of such masters of the macabre as Edgar Allan Poe, Ray Bradbury, Stephen King, Alfred Hitchcock, and Rod Serling. As Doniol-Valcroze and Flam put it, the tales were written “in the lonely hour of the wolf … in the pre-dawn darkness when you get those ‘waking nightmares.’”

Doniol-Valcroze and Flam are screenwriters working in Los Angeles. They met at New York University's film school and started collaborating, first on short films and then on screenplays. That working relationship forged a natural path to writing stories.

“We're both very passionate about short fiction,” says Flam. “It's our favorite form to read and write. After working together for many years on film projects, we realized we had a lot of ideas … that could only be done as short stories, so we decided to finally pull the trigger.”

The short-short story format makes a perfect fit for the authors' strange visions. They immediately set up surreal and terrifying situations, which lead to even stranger conclusions. The stories can be read in their entirety in the time it takes to pour a cup of coffee and settle in with the book.

“Neal Edelstein (producer, MULHOLLAND DRIVE) has endorsed the book, and we’re excited because his new horror app HAUNTING MELISSA was the main inspiration for us to release the stories direct-to-audience,” says Doniol-Valcroze.

One of the authors' favorite stories in 41 STRANGE is “Frank’s Wash,” in which a man finds himself stuck on the conveyor belt of a car wash. All attempts to get the car wash operator's attention fail. Where Frank finally ends up becomes a chilling dissection of the parent-child relationship.

“We think (the stories) all embody that unnerving atmosphere,” Doniol-Valcroze and Flam say. “You're not quite sure if the events unfolding around the character are happening for real, or are they just a figment of the character's overactive imagination. We love that ambiguity.”

Doniol-Valcroze and Flam believe that 41 STRANGE will appeal to a general audience of film lovers and short story readers, as well as fans of science-fiction, horror and crime, and readers looking “for a quick dose of strange stories for commuting, or just curling up for a chilling night read before bed.”

Thank you for this interview!  I’d like to know more about you as a person first.  What do you do when you’re not writing?

I love watching film noir.

When did you start writing?

Nine years old. A tiny story called Mr. Untouchable.

As a published author, what would you say was the most pivotal point of your writing life?

Reading Camus’s The Myth of Sisyphus as a teen. Second, and biggest pivotal point, was finding my writing collaborator.

If you could go anywhere in the world to start writing your next book, where would that be and why?

I’d write a book floating in a spacecraft orbiting the earth. For the perspective.

If you had 4 hours of extra time today, what would you do?

Invent a new secret language.

Where would you like to set a story that you haven’t done yet?

On Jupiter’s moon Ganymede.

Back to your present book, 41 Strange, how did you publish it?

We decided to self-publish. We truly wanted as much control over the content and artwork as possible. We were also inspired by a friend, Neal Edelstein (producer, Mulholland Drive), who released the new horror app Haunting Melissa direct-to-audience, and we thought it could be neat to control the distribution with the short-short stories direct-to-readers.

In writing your book, did you travel anywhere for research?

No.

Why was writing 41 Strange so important to you?

There was something urgent that I can’t explain which seized my will and made me do it.

Where do you get your best ideas and why do you think that is?

I don’t know what my best ideas are, but I get most of my ideas from a cup of coffee.

Any final words?

If you’re curious and would like to take a trip, you’re welcome to stay at The Hotel 41 Strange. It has 41 rooms… dark as they come…

Interview with Karen-Anne Stewart: 'Even a mundane trip to the grocery store can spark a great scene in a story'

Karen-Anne Stewart has always adored reading and has now fallen in love with writing. Her written works are The Rain Trilogy: Saving Rain, Healing Rain, and After the Rain, and the newly released stand alone novel, Ash to Steele. Her debut novel, Saving Rain: The First Novel in The Rain Trilogy, was a nominee for the Book Junkie’s Choice Awards, and Saving Rain and After the Rain were nominees for the 2014 RONE Awards.

When Karen-Anne isn’t writing, she enjoys spending time with her family and friends, hiking, and visiting new places. She fuels her addiction of creating new stories by her only other addiction, caffeine, and listening to a myriad of musical genres. Tucked away near the
Blue Ridge Mountains, Karen-Anne lives with her husband, daughter, two dogs, and their cat. She plans on writing new adult romance as long as her fingers maintain dexterity.

About the Book:

Emma

Who I am and all I believe is marred with just one glance into angry, steel blue eyes. He seems to control my air, my ability to breathe. He makes me crave everything I know is a sin. Pure becomes tainted and lines are blurred. It's my fault; I'm the one who isn't strong enough. I've been damaged...broken. Breck's words haunt me...'There's a consequence for every choice you make.'

Breck

I've had so many women I can't even remember over half of their names, but none of them are mine; I make damn sure of that. I take what I desire and never look back. I don't need or want anyone, ever...not until I met Emma. Those eyes bore into what's left of my soul and her touch sears me, weakens me. I want to hate her for that. She is my ruin...my sweetest hell.

Thank you for this interview!  I’d like to know more about you as a person first.  What do you do when you’re not writing?

Hi.  Thank you for having me!  I love hanging out with my husband and daughter, going to movies, hiking, or just driving around the forest.  Getting lost in a great book is another of my favorite pastimes.

When did you start writing?

I began writing my debut novel, Saving Rain, in September 2012, but first realized that I wanted to become an author one day when I was in college and our class was assigned a short story.  I fell in love!

As a published author, what would you say was the most pivotal point of your writing life?

When a reader told me how reading Saving Rain helped her get through some difficult times and when another reader finished The Rain Trilogy and decided to do her final college paper on human trafficking.  Those moments were unbelievably amazing and humbling to me.

If you could go anywhere in the world to start writing your next book, where would that be and why?

Italy….because it’s freakin’ Italy!  I’ve always dreamed of visiting Venice, Tuscany, Pisa, and all the cobblestone streets and beautiful vineyards.  I researched Italy for Healing Rain, and I can’t wait until the time comes when I can visit in person.

If you had 4 hours of extra time today, what would you do?

Sleep, then read.  I miss spending time reading; I don’t get to do it nearly as much anymore, but I still squeeze in time.

Where would you like to set a story that you haven’t done yet?

I love to have different places in my novels.  One place I would like to use as a setting in the future is New Zealand.  I’ve never been, but it looks like it’s breathtaking.

Back to your present book, Ash to Steele, how did you publish it?

I’m a self-published Indie author and I published Ash to Steele through Kindle Direct and Create Space on Amazon.

In writing your book, did you travel anywhere for research?

Actually, I live very close to where Emma is from in Ash to Steele.  I’ve been to Pickens. S.C. a handful of times.  As far as Boston, where most of the novel takes place, I’ve only been there once, but I loved it!  I wanted to move to Boston when I was younger but never did.  So far, I haven’t traveled specifically for my books, but I would love to!

Why was writing Ash to Steele so important to you?

I’m such a sucker for a bad boy with a good heart and Breck Steele is definitely a tattooed, one night stand, I’ll-kick-your-ass-if-you-mess-with-me-or-someone-I-love kind of bad boy, but he has a heart of gold underneath his cocky exterior.  He also is dealing with some serious personal demons, especially once he meets Emma.

I can relate to Emma with growing up in a small town myself and experiencing many of the same feelings she struggles with as she tries to find out who she wants to be while finding her more in this life.  I wanted to write a love story that is not only sexy, but also shows how the power of love can take two completely opposite people who want to hate each other and heal, redeem, and forge an undeniable bond instead.

Where do you get your best ideas and why do you think that is?

Everyday life provides an amazing environment to come up with ideas for writing.  Even a mundane trip to the grocery store can spark a great scene in a story.  Music is also a huge inspiration to me.  If I need to get my head in a certain scene, I will put in the type of music that I know will help get my mind where it needs to be.  For example, I listened to heavy, darker music while writing the scene where Emma was attacked.

Any final words?

Thank you again!  I appreciate all of you taking the time to stop by to get to know a little more about Ash to Steele.  I hope you fall in love with Breck and Emma as much as I did writing their story.  I would love to hear from you, so feel free to connect with me at any (or all) of the following:

For More Information

What are you most proud of accomplishing so far in your life?
Raising two hero-material sons to adulthood.
How has your upbringing influenced your writing?
I grew up in England and moved to Australia with my husband when our sons were very young. I don’t know whether my upbringing has influenced my writing, but I’ve always gravitated towards people who make me laugh and a little humour usually manages to creep into my writing, so maybe their influence has rubbed off.
When and why did you begin writing?
I began writing seriously in 2003 after leaving work as a corporate communications manager. I’d been writing as part of my job for a long time, but always non-fiction, of course, about exciting subjects such as sewage treatment plants. I was very ready to try something light-hearted, with a happy ending.
Do you recall how your interest in writing originated?
I was a voracious reader as a child. I devoured Swallows and Amazons and all books by Arthur Ransome, and I told my family that I would be a writer when I grew up, but I took a different career path.
When did you first know you could be a writer?
I submitted two of my early romance manuscripts to a Romance Writers of America chapter contest and they took out first and third place. The winning manuscript was requested in full by the final judge and this was great for my confidence. The same manuscript went on to be my first published book.
What inspires you to write and why?
The characters in my head pester me to sit down and write their stories!
What genre are you most comfortable writing?
My latest release is my first romantic suspense. I have also written romantic comedy and sweet contemporary romance. I enjoy all three.
What inspired you to write your first book?
My first published book was inspired by a news story that I heard on the radio about a hostile takeover attempt of a family-owned winery in the Barossa Valley, South Australia, by a multinational beverage company. I began to think about the effect on family members and the local community of such a takeover. My story explored the relationship between a young woman who’d just inherited her family’s winery and the French acquisitions manager of a global business intent on acquiring the winery.
Who or what influenced your writing once you began?
I began by writing for Harlequin Romance and was influenced by the Australian authors who were already writing for that line such as Barbara Hannay, Ally Blake, Nicola Marsh and others.
What do you consider the most challenging about writing a novel, or about writing in general?
I always struggle with the middle of a book. I’ve accepted now that it is part of my process to slow down and take it a paragraph at a time until I’ve passed the middle section. It has nothing to do with the amount of plotting I do – I’ve tried more and less, but always it is the same.
Did writing this book teach you anything and what was it?
I learned a lot about opal mining in South Australia. I’d always been interested in the region and knew that, because of the extreme summer temperatures, many people made their homes underground, dug out of the rock, but it was fascinating to learn that some of the houses in Coober Pedy are so large that they have underground swimming pools! Mining for opals is different from other types of gem mining because it is undertaken by individuals rather than businesses. There are no big mining companies in the industry.
Do you intend to make writing a career?
Yes, I consider myself a career writer.
Have you developed a specific writing style?
Every writer has a unique voice, and even though I write in a slightly different style for each of the sub-genres, romantic suspense, romantic comedy and sweet contemporary romance, I’ve been told that my voice is still distinctively mine.
What is your favorite quality about yourself?
I always meet a deadline. I haven’t missed one yet.
What is your least favorite quality about yourself?
I procrastinate until I put myself under pressure to meet my deadlines!
What is your favorite quote, by whom, and why?
“The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” ― Lao Tzu

I love this quote because it is applicable to so many things that we find difficult, large or small – writing a book, losing weight, breaking a habit, starting a business – all of them can seem daunting, but the only way to accomplish any of them is to focus on that first step and not worry about the rest of the journey.

Claire Baxter writes contemporary romantic fiction of all lengths. Her short stories have been published in commercial women's magazines around the world, while her novels have been translated into 20 languages and have finalled in the Romance Writers of Australia's Romantic Book of the Year Award, the Booksellers' Best Awards, the RT Book Reviews Reviewers' Choice Awards and the Cataromance Reviewers' Choice Awards. Before following her passion to write full-time, Claire was an award-winning corporate communications manager. Earlier, she worked as a translator and a PA. Claire grew up in Warwickshire, England, but for more than 20 years has called Australia home. She considers herself lucky to live near one of Adelaide's beautiful metropolitan beaches where she loves to walk and think up stories.
Her latest book is the romantic suspense novel, Down Among the Dead Men. For More Information

Interview with Diane Doniol-Valcroze, co-author of '41 Strange'

Diane Doniol-Valcroze was born in Paris, France. As a young girl, she developed a passion for writing from her father, Jacques Doniol-Valcroze, co-founder of the New Wave magazine CAHIERS DU CINEMA, and from her grandfather, French filmmaker André Cayatte (original THE MIRROR HAS TWO FACES). She earned a B.A. in English literature from the Sorbonne University, and an M.F.A. in film from New York University while apprenticing on the Lauren Hutton show. She has co-written screenplays for such films as Lionsgate's PENNY DREADFUL, starring Mimi Rogers, and MGM's HIT AND RUN, helmed by Enda McCallion and starring Kevin Corrigan. 41 STRANGE is her debut book. She lives in Los Angeles.

  • 41 Strange is available at Amazon.
  • Discuss this book at PUYB Virtual Book Club at Goodreads.

Thank you for this interview!  I’d like to know more about you as a person first.  What do you do when you’re not writing?

I love watching film noir on a rainy night. I love watching high-risk sports, especially downhill skiing.

When did you start writing?

I started writing little stories at 13, bedridden with stomach flu.

As a published author, what would you say was the most pivotal point of your writing life?

Reading The Unknown Masterpiece by Balzac as a kid. And biggest, finding a writing collaborator who’s on the same wavelength.

If you could go anywhere in the world to start writing your next book, where would that be and why?

I’d love to write in a log cabin somewhere in the Swiss Alps… hopefully not snowbound. I wouldn’t want to freeze to death like Jack Torrance in The Shining.

If you had 4 hours of extra time today, what would you do?

Work as a clown in a children’s hospital.

Where would you like to set a story that you haven’t done yet?

In the mysterious Land of the Thunder Dragon in Bhutan.

To purge out those inner demons!

Where do you get your best ideas and why do you think that is?

I’m not sure which ideas are the “best” but I get inspiration from observing people in the streets, and insects. I also use films.

Any final words?

I hope I can share those demons with the readers, I’d feel less lonely!

My friend Sue and I had spent so much time together we felt like sisters. We had made so many plans for our future, as young girls do. We would graduate from school, get married, have a career, children and we would be lifelong friends sharing those moments together. Part of that dream had already come true. Sue was a year older than myself. I went to her graduation and was so proud of her. She had just got an apartment with her boyfriend. I was halfway through my senior year. We went Christmas shopping at the mall. But by January 16, 1980, my friend Sue went missing. When I graduated Sue wasn't there. Then I got my first apartment, still no Sue. I would hear nothing about what happened to Sue for 15 years. Now I will try to fill in the blanks that I have learned over the years. And the surprising shocker after 33 years. Because of the sensitive nature of this book I will be using the pen name Crystal Clary. Since most of the information that I'm sharing with you was unknown to me at the time I decided to write this book in Omniscient: so you as the reader will be able to see all and know all.

Unfortunately, life requires a lot of living in between these most gratifying of pursuits, so Golf Balls Are Female is also about public humiliation, immaturity, emotional desperation, broken engagements, deceit, stupidity, sexually transmitted diseases, cybersex, lovesick lunacy, divorce, one-night stands, heartache, and partaking of the world's oldest profession. Although there are numerous incidents that stretch to the limits of plausibility, the book is based on real life stories. In fact, bona fide concerns about personal retaliation have convinced me to actually leave out some of the more incriminating details. Some readers may find our humor irreverent, others may deem our lifestyles to border on misogynistic, both would be correct. However, those that read beyond the outrageous behavior will find that Golf Balls Are Female is really about friendship. Most importantly, this book answers one of modern man's most enduring questions-golf balls are definitely female! amazon

For many years, evangelist Patricia Kinard lived a life of illusions. She soon realized that life wasn’t about her plans, but rather those of the Father, who defines a purpose for every situation. In My Angelic Journey, Kinard narrates her journey after she discovered the true purpose God had for her. In this memoir, she details her transformation from a child with a measure of faith into a teenager with increased faith, and finally into a mature woman with undoubting faith who was blessed with a vision and later instructed to become an evangelist. It shows how her trials and physical and emotional losses were replaced by joy when she put her faith and trust in God. A powerful, firsthand testimony, My Angelic Journey offers a look into the life of a sinner who, after receiving a call from God, walked from a life of darkness into one of glorious light. It shares the story of one woman, chosen by God, who now guides others into a life of prosperity, dignity, love, and goodness based on a Christian foundation. amazon   Patricia Kinard is an evangelist for Faith in God Ministries, a nonprofit organization. She earned a bachelor of science degree in multidisciplinary studies, focusing in theology and accounting, from Liberty University and has worked for the government for more than twenty years. She lives in Montross, Virginia.
