2021 Reading Challenges Master List

Online Libraries - 25 Places to Read Free Books Online

If you are like me, you wait all year to find out what reading challenges are going to be hosted, which ones you are going to jump in and join, and then trying to decide books to choose to fulfill the challenge. I also love that it helps me not only find new sites to follow, but make new friends along the way.

I have decided to keep a Master List so if you hit my site you will be able to see which ones are available this year. If I am missing any, or you have one you want me to add please comment or send me a message. I will be doing individual posts once I decide which ones I will take part in.

Hope to see you at some of these challenges, and happy reading!

2021 Reading Challenges Master List

19 in 2021 Reading Challenge - 19 different categories to expand your reading selection.

The 52 Book Clubs 2021 Challenge - 52 prompts, 52 weeks. Looks fun!

52 Books in 52 Weeks - 52 categories, 52 books, if this sounds fun then this is for you.

Alphabet Soup Reading Challenge - It’s an alphabet challenge!!! The challenge is to read one book that has a title starting with every letter of the alphabet.

Around the Year in 52 Books - This one is a little different as it is hosted on Goodreads. Check it out, it looks interesting.

A to Z Reading Challenge - Think you can read a book that starts with each letter of the alphabet? This is the challenge for you. Along with mini challenges and an end of the year giveaway, this is one I'm going to try and tackle this year.

Back to the Classics - Looking to read classics that you have always wanted to read? Or maybe re-read some that you love? This is the challenge for you.

Beachcomber Mystery Reading Challenge - Think you can become a Beachcomber by filling up 4 beach bags while reading mysteries?

Beat the Backlist 2021 Challenge - Quite possibly my favorite challenge. Any format, any genre. Re-reads count, and you don’t have to own the book. There is also a great spreadsheet to help you track things.

Book Award Reading Challenge - This one looks great, read one award winning book per month, the thing I like most is the book award has to correspond with the month you are reading. So January you pick a book that won an award in January. Sounds fun!

Book Bingo 2021 - Looking to complete a Bingo card? Or maybe just complete a row? Check out this challenge!

Book It: 12 Books in 12 Months - Pretty self explanatory but it does give you prompts. Another one I'll have to check out.

Book to Movie Challenge - Just like it sounds, read a book that has been turned into a movie

British Crime Classics Challenge - The British Crime Classics Challenge has no rules whatsoever. As the title suggests, make sure to read Mystery Classics (on or before 1965) written by British Author(s).

The Booklist Queen 2021 Reading Challenge - Join thousands of others as we read a book a week in 2021. That’s right, this 2021 Reading Challenge has 52 different categories to expand your reading selection.

Build Your Library Challenge - Hygge is a Danish word that describes a lifestyle placing emphasis on coziness and happy living. So this year is all about finding your happy place – reading great books, lighting candles, eating foods that bring you comfort. Embrace the Hygge! Prompts for this one as well.

Color Coded Reading Challenge - Read nine books with the following colors in the title or cover: Blue, red, yellow, green, brown, black, white, any other color, and a word or image that implies color.

Chunkster Reading Challenge - This one is for reading any book over 450 pages. I have quite a few but will see if I want to commit to it, lol

Diversify Your Reading Challenge -This challenge features 16 prompts: 12 genre prompts, and 4 bonus categories. You’ll be reading from the prescribed genre each month, with an additional bonus read for each quarter.

Dystopia Reading Challenge - If you love dystopian novels, or are looking to try some out, this is the challenge for you.

Finishing the Series Reading Challenge - I am as guilty of this as anyone, so this looks like a great challenge.

Historical Fiction Reading Challenge - Any sub-genre of historical fiction is accepted (Historical Romance, Historical Mystery, Historical Fantasy, Young Adult, History/Non-Fiction, etc.) Different levels to sign up for.

Historical Romance Bingo - Just like it sounds, you read historical romance novels and try to get Bingo.

I Will Read All the Books on My Bookshelf Challenge - Not possible for me but this still looks like it could be fun. There are 7 prompts so I think I will join and try to complete those 7.

Language on the Move - As was the case previously, the Language on the Move Reading Challenge 2021 is designed to encourage broad reading in the discipline and beyond, and to make linguistics reading fun. Anyone with an interest in the intersection of linguistic diversity and social life can join.

Literary Escape Challenge - Try to read 1 book set in each of the 50 states + the District of Columbia.

Memoir Reading Challenge -Read a minimum of five memoirs from any of the categories listed. One book can only count for one category.

Monthly Motif Reading Challenge - A Motif, or theme, is given for each month. Your task is to read 1 book that fits the motif for that month.

Mount TBR Challenge - A challenge to tackle your TBR pile - different levels to sign up for.

New Release Challenge - Read books released in 2021 with multiple levels

PopSugar Reading Challenge - Read books that meet 40 random fun and interesting prompts. For an extra challenge read books that meet the 10 advanced prompts.

Pretty Mess Reading Challenge - Join me and many others as we read a book every two weeks in 2021. Yep, this Reading Challenge has 26 different categories to expand your reading selection. If you add in a book of your choice every two weeks then that’s 52 books, one for each week of the year.

Read Harder Challenge - Just as in years past, there are 24 tasks, averaging two per month over the course of the next 12 months. You may count one book for multiple tasks or read one book per task. The point of the challenge is to push yourself to expand your horizons and break out of set reading habits; the hope is that you’ll discover voices, settings, characters, formats, and more you may not have encountered without that nudge. Be accountable to yourself, share what you learned along the way, and enjoy the experience!

Reading Challenge 2021 - 20 prompts to help you choose some great books to read next year

TBR Reading Challenge - Your mission, should you choose to accept it: once a month pull a dormant book out of your TBR pile and read it.  On the 3rd Wednesday of the month, talk about that book. There are themes to this one as well.

Turtle Recall Reading Challenge - Read books set in Terry Pratchett’s Discworld. This challenge isn’t to read the whole of the series as I know that is a big commitment. Just hop along reading the Discworld novels. Ones you still need to read or ones that you want to reread.

Uncorked Reading Challenge -  This reading challenge has 12 themes — one for each month — with books to inspire travel, inspirational fiction and nonfiction, and diverse, international reads. Book suggestions will be both heavy and fluffy.

While I Was Reading Challenge - 12 reading challenge categories for this one

Thank you for this interview!  I’d like to know more about you as a person first.  What do you do when you’re not writing?

Let’s see. I’m laughing, dancing, listening to music, hanging out with my hubby in and out of the bedroom, lol, running a church with my Pastor husband, traveling, spending some time with my sibs, and teaching women and couples how to make their sex life pop with fun, sizzle, and excitement!

When did you start writing?

The crazy thing about that, is as I became more “seasoned”, wiser, and more self-aware, I would just write down certain experiences that were meaningful to me. So, I never considered myself a writer in the sense of it being my passion and heartbeat. When I decided to actually write to be published, I found out just how much I didn’t know about being a writer and if I even wanted to do it.

As a published author, what would you say was the most pivotal point of your writing life?

The most pivotal point in my writing life was learning how much I didn’t know about the writing process, and how much work was involved. When I decided to write my first book, Secrets of a Good Wife: Sex Truths and Other Marriage Essentials, I went to a 3-day writing retreat in Denver CO.

I am from L.A. and once I returned home, I was totally disillusioned and thought I would write my book in 30 days. Ha! Well that didn’t happen. It actually took me 2 years from writing and publishing my book and I tell you, I had a love/hate affair with the whole thing.

If you could go anywhere in the world to start writing your next book, where would that be and why?

Since my books are mostly about marriage and sex, I would love to go someplace sexy and full of sensuality, like Tahiti or Hawaii to get inspiration. I would love to be enveloped in beauty of that type of vibe, sexy, sensual, seductive, idyllic, inviting, what I call paradise, which is also how I describe sexual intimacy.

I am sure being there would move something deep within me and bring out something special I didn’t even know was there.

If you had 4 hours of extra time today, what would you do?

If I had 4 extra hours today, I would drive to Palm Springs where my Hubby is working and surprise him with a “lip smacking” lunch date.

Where would you like to set a story that you haven’t done yet?

Italy. One year for my birthday my Hubby took me to a place in Long Beach that offered Gondola rides. I lived in LB for years and never knew anything about it. We boarded the gondola and rode along a path that gave us a taste and feel of Italy. The gondolier sang to us and every time we crossed under a bridge, we had to kiss each other. I loved that because it stirred the hopeless romantic in me!

Back to your present book, The Mis-Education of the Church Girl: Revealing Truths about Sex, Sexuality, and Self-love” how did you publish it?

I self-published the original copy, but needed to add more pop and appeal to the inside. Soon after, someone invited me to a Facebook group where one of the moderators posted a beautiful flyer and a journal she had designed. I reached out to her and we connected.
I hired her company, IBG Publishing, and she not only redesigned and published my journal but also helped to expand my brand, and increase my social media presence. I celebrated with a Virtual Launch party, July 3, 2020!
In writing your book, did you travel anywhere for research?

Only to my bookshelf of resources and to my own knowledge and experience!

Why was writing The Mis-Education of the Church Girl: Revealing Truths about Sex, Sexuality, and Self-love” so important to you?

First and most importantly, because it is a calling directly from the Most High-God in case there’s any confusion.

Once I was given this incredible honor, I learned that for years, women had been losing in their sex lives, suffering in silence, but also crying out to God in their pain. That hurt my heart because I want women to win in every area of their lives.

God heard their cries and has called Believers to the area of sexual wellness. That’s when it became not only my goal and passion but also my duty and obligation to teach women how to win in their sex lives.

In addition to being a Certified Sex Coach and Marriage Advocate I am also a Pastor’s wife. I believe, as Michele Obama said in her documentary, Becoming, God gave me this platform for a reason and I am not going to waste it!

Where do you get your best ideas and why do you think that is?

In the shower, lol! There is something about that water that arouses my creativity. The first few thoughts and ideas tumble into my soul and spirit then the waterfall begins! There are so many I have to select the ones that speak loudest to me. Then I ask God to please bring them back to my remembrance when I get out of the shower to write them down. And He always does!

Any final words?

I believe my journal, The Mis-Education of the Church Girl: Revealing Truths about Sex, Sexuality, and Self-love. A Personal Journal of Self-Discovery, will change so many lives, and sexual enjoyment for the Church Girl will no longer be elusive but finally be a rich and rewarding experience she will cherish and return to as often as her heart desires.

Thank you for interviewing me.

Book Review: The Demolition of Democracy by Ted Bagley

Inside the Book:

Title: The Demolition of Democracy
Author: Ted Bagley
Publisher: XLibrisUS
Genre: Political Science
Format: Ebook/Paperback/Hardcover

This work is a synopsis of how I, from my research, feel that this current administration and its behavior, policies, and attack on the democratic foundation of the country could be the undoing of the US as we know it today.

Purchase Here

My Review:
An interesting look at our current government and what is and isn't wrong according to the author. These are some weird and trying times and I enjoyed reading what his thoughts were on Trump and his administration and followers. I am not usually too political, but have found that in the current state our country is in, you almost don't have a choice. And whether you are Democrat, Republican or Independent, you might find something you didn't know about before after reading this.

Meet the Author:
The author is writing his fourth novel ,The Demolition of Democracy, to give substance to what he sees as a threat to the stability of our country by the current Trump administration.

Release Blitz: Superbu Homecoming by Debarshi Kanjilal

Fiction (Family Life), Fiction (Pets and Animals), Fiction (Urban)

Date Published: August 15, 2020

photo add-to-goodreads-button_zpsc7b3c634.png

You cried with Hachiko. You got spooked and then laughed it off with Scooby Doo. And you fell in love with John Grogan's incorrigible Marley. But you have yet to meet a dog quite like Super Bu ♥.

After years of arguments on the matter, the Bera family has finally decided to bring home a dog.

① Ajay has wanted a dog since he was a child. He has fantasized about every version of his future life around them.

② His brother, Arun, would love to get a dog as much but doesn't mind not having to clean up after one.

③ Ajit, their father, also wants to get a dog. He just wants to feel the love of a dog again, like he used to when he was a child.

⚠ Barnali, Ajit's wife, loathes the idea of having a dog in the house. She spent her childhood praying for only one thing, that she shouldn't get married into a family that has dogs. And until now, she got her wish.

But now, Ajay has finally worn out his mother's resilience and the Beras are bringing home a dog. Can this be just the homecoming that the dog or the family had anticipated?

Read now and find out.

Excerpt

“So, what breed is it?” Mohit, who once had a border collie of his own, was curious and waiting to start drawing parallels from his days with his own dog.

“A dachshund,” Arun replied.

“Oh, that tiny sausage-like dog?” Ajanta burst into a bout of laughter as she asked the question. None of the Beras joined in on her laughter so she let it fizzle out quickly.

“A small dog is actually better for a family that mostly stays indoors,” said Arun.

“Dachshunds can be very irritating, dumb dogs. They keep barking at everyone for no reason,” Mohit added.

“Not at all. I had a dachshund, growing up. I also had a German Shepherd. That dachshund was the most intelligent dog that I have ever seen in my life.” Ajit had been very vocal about that when he pushed Ajay to get a dachshund instead of a German Shepherd as well.

Ajay also decided to participate in the conversation, for a change. “Dachshunds are also tremendously vigilant guard dogs. And they have amazing energy.”

“Maybe, but it has almost no fur. Their skin looks like that of a mongrel on the street,” Ajanta added with twitched, judgmental eyebrows and her characteristic, sarcastic grin. Barnali chimed in as she brought out the now prepared tea and placed the tray on the table, “Actually, if you touch the coat it is extremely smooth and silky. I wish I had hair that silky!”

“Alright, alright! Your dachshund is the most pretty and most intelligent dog in the world,” the conceit in Mohit’s voice was hard to conceal, “but why are you keeping it in hiding? You don’t want us to see it?”

“She has been petrified since yesterday and has not stopped shaking since she arrived. I suppose she is yet to get acclimatized in her new environment. Perhaps also dealing with a bit of separation anxiety after being taken from her mother.” Ajit had evidently been thinking about Bu all morning.

“I’ll go and get her,” said Ajay, and headed back to his grandmother’s room once again. It was a good ten minutes before he came back holding Bu in his arms. The light was brighter in the living room and it accentuated all the ribs that her skin was barely draping.

“She looks like she is dying,” Mohit exclaimed.

There was something that lurked in the dark; whenever the team members moved around, performing miracles, healing and assisting other brothers in preaching, they could sense a sidelong, fading look mingled in the shadows of the crowds.

The team seemed not to think about it, since it was so subtle, they didn’t even bother paying attention to it, not after defeating gigantic evil leaders, impressive commanders, and conquering the Five Cities.

Pastor Good knew it was a big call to set up a church in each town, as he was instructed. “But Lord, how am I supposed to set up five churches when the people don’t even understand your Word?” The Pastor thought. Somehow, he knew he just needed to complete the tasks assigned to him and the Lord would see the rest through. After all, he was not alone. The Team Warriors and The Missioners were with him. But above all, his greatest ally was God Almighty.

John Byner (with Douglas Wellman)
Celebrity Memoir

Veteran entertainer John Byner, a man of many voices and characters, from impersonating the slow, rolling gait and speech of John Wayne, to lending his voice to The Ant and the Aardvark cartoons has penned (with Douglas Wellman) his biography FIVE MINUTES, MR. BYNER! published by Boutique of Quality Books. His dead-on impersonations, as well as his unique talents as a character actor, have put him on the small screen in peoples' homes, the big screen in theaters, and no screen on Broadway.

“. . . John has had a remarkable career spanning decades, from doing comedy in small clubs in Greenwich Village to The Ed Sullivan Show. . . Ed loved him. . . to The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, to Steve Allen, who basically invented the talk show, to The Carol Burnett Show, to just about every major variety show or situation comedy there was on the air, to hosting his own variety show and introducing Bob Einstein as Super Dave Osborne, and on and on. . . . And he’s still going strong, as funny and as kind as ever.” – Nathan Lane

Growing up in a big family on Long Island, John discovered his uncanny ability to mimic voices as a child when he returned home from a Bing Crosby movie and repeated Bing’s performance for his family in their living room. He discovered his talent made him the focus of everyone’s attention, and allowed him to make friends wherever he went, from elementary school to the U.S. Navy. John started his career in nightclubs in New York, but soon found himself getting national acclaim on The Ed Sullivan Show. With that he was on his way. This memoir is the best and funniest moments of his life, career, and relationships with some of the biggest names in entertainment, both on and
off the screen. “I thought of doing a memoir a year before I began writing it. My friend (co-author), Doug Wellman, suggested years before that if I wanted to write a book he would assist me,” remarked Mr.Byner.

Some people call it fate; others call it luck. Whatever you call it, you've probably been somewhere by chance at exactly the right moment and ended up getting a welcome surprise. I had one of those moments early in my career and it changed my life.
My ability to mimic voices opened up some special opportunities for me. Initially it was just a hobby. I entertained family members, school mates, buddies in the navy, and my coworkers in a myriad of blue-collar jobs, and one white-collar one. I had no idea my future would be in the spotlight in night clubs, television, cartoons, movies, variety shows, and a host of other exciting places. And maybe it wouldn't have been except for fate, luck, or whatever you want to call it. My world opened up one night because I happened to be on a little stage in New York at just the right moment. It was an unplanned event. Had it not occurred, I don't know where I'd be today.

John Byner’s TV career break happened in New York City on Merv Griffin’s Talent Scouts Show in 1964. After great exposure on both Gary Moore and Steve Allen’s variety shows in 1966 and 1967, he clowned around on Ed Sullivan’s showcase program over two dozen times and Johnny Carson’s late-night haunt over three dozen times.

He has lent his vocal library of voices to hundreds of cartoons and animated films. To find out more about John and his book, visit http://johnbyner.com.

Douglas Wellman was born in Minneapolis but moved to Los Angeles where he became a television producer-director for 35 years, as well as the assistant dean of the film school at the University of Southern California. He currently lives in Southern Utah with his wife, Deborah, where he works as a chaplain at a local hospital when not busy writing books.

Book Review: Design Process by Mauro Moro

Title: Design Process
Author: Maura Moro
Publisher: PartridgeSingapore
Genre: Reference/General
Format: Ebook
My design process is not only a handbook full of useful tools and kits. It is also an act of love to design. It is a prayer for design to get back to its glory days when it made sense. It is an appeal to the younger designers! Don’t surrender to the status quo who wants you just as worker ants! Don’t lose your inner voice and your passion for design! Don’t get comfortable in the prevailing conformism! Ask! Seek! Find! Discover new ways, never settle against the pre-cooked solutions, predictable patterns and pre-set goals! Go beyond! Make the impossible!

I have to admit this book was a little above my head. I am not a designer by trade but do love learning all I can. The author does an excellent job of explaining the different elements and how to use them in a traditional or non-traditional way. Don't settle for boring, and expand your thinking. By doing that you will be able to achieve all your dreams and more.
