What are you
most proud of accomplishing so far in your life?
It will
sound sappy but I am proud of raising two kids who I don’t think are destined
to be serial killers. It is such a hard
job-being a parent- and everyday they are alive and well I count it as a win.
How has your
upbringing influenced your writing?
I’m from the
South and my family is chockfull of storytellers. I grew up on aunts, uncles
and grandparents trying to outdo each other at the dinner table.
When and why
did you begin writing?
I have
scribbled my entire life always planning to write a book “someday”. I had a
dear friend die of breast cancer when she was 42 – shortly after my 40th
birthday – and I realized that I wasn’t guaranteed to get a “someday”. So I got off my a** and did it. I was
published two years later.
Do you
recall how your interest in writing originated?
I love to
read! I think my love of books fueled my imagination and inspired me to create
my own stories. I wrote my first book when I was eight and I recently found it
in my Dad’s attic and it was hilarious.
When did you
first know you could be a writer?
I think when I got the first few editors requesting my work. That
professional validation was key to my confidence.
What
inspires you to write and why?
Everything
but mostly music. I’m a singer in a band and have been for most of my life so I
love the stories that music tells. I always put together a playlist for my
books – songs that speak to me and get my creative mojo going.
What genre
are you most comfortable writing?
Contemporary
romance. I love the interplay of the characters and the emotions I can infuse
into everyday life. I have a paranormal coming out next month and I loved
writing it but the world building was very challenging for me.
What
inspired you to write your first book?
I set “A
Night of Southern Comfort” in a small, fictional town outside of Roanoke, VA in
the Blue Ridge Mountains. I grew up in this area and I was always drawn to the
story of young people leaving a small town to find their place in the world and
then discovering that it was back at home. SO, I thought of four guys who were
lifelong friends who left town and had them all come back for various reasons .
. . three books later . . . .
Who or what
influenced your writing once you began?
I love a
great story, so I would say that my most influential writers are Shannon
McKenna, Carly Phillips, Robyn Carr, Robin Kaye . . . too many to count!
What do you
consider the most challenging about writing a novel, or about writing in
general?
The
discipline of doing it everyday. It is so tempting to just watch one more TV
show . . .LOL.
Did writing
this book teach you anything and what was it?
That it is
really hard to redeem a hero that isn’t very heroic. Teague was in the first
two books and his personality wasn’t endearing. To suddenly make him the
leading man was tough but I think his journey is why so many reviews say that
he is their favorite.
Do you
intend to make writing a career?
Yes. It is a
second career right now but as soon as the numbers work, I will quit the evil
day job.
Have you
developed a specific writing style?
I think I
have a distinctive voice- snarky and sexy- but I don’t think I did anything to
develop it. It is just the way I put stuff on the page.
What is your greatest strength as a
writer?
My sex
scenes. They flow for me and I hear that they are scorchers.
What is your
favorite quality about yourself?
My sense of
humor about myself. I never want to take myself too seriously.
What is your
least favorite quality about yourself?
My ability
to procrastinate. Oh – I am so lazy sometimes.
What is your
favorite quote, by whom, and why?
“Over it.
Under it. Around it.” Sherrilyn Kenyon said it in a speech and it stuck with
me. When obstacles pop up – figure out how to get around them. No excuses.
